Why Telehealth? Rethinking how we connect in therapy

For decades, the traditional image of therapy has been fixed: a quiet office, a comfortable couch, a box of tissues, and a long drive through traffic to get there.

While there is undeniable value in sitting face-to-face in the same physical room, that traditional setup also creates real barriers. Life gets busy, schedules get tight, and geography often gets in the way.

Having provided therapy via video-conferencing for over 15 years, I’ve watched teletherapy evolve from a novelty into one of the most powerful tools we have for meaningful mental health support. Here is why I choose telehealth—and why it might be the right fit for you.

1. Lowering the Barrier to Care

Taking care of your mental health shouldn't feel like a logistical obstacle course. When therapy requires commuting, navigating traffic, finding parking, or arranging childcare, it becomes one more stressor on an already full plate.

With telehealth, those friction points disappear. All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer and a reliable internet connection. Whether you’re logging in during a lunch break, fitting a session in between household tasks, or connecting from the comfort of your couch, care fits naturally into your routine—not the other way around.

2. Stepping Into Your World

There’s a common misconception that virtual therapy creates emotional distance. In my 15+ years of clinical experience, I’ve found the exact opposite to be true.

When a client travels to my office, they step into my world—an unfamiliar environment where it can take time to let down their guard. But through telehealth, the dynamic flips: I get to step into your world.

Seeing clients in their natural environments—where they live, work, and feel most like themselves—offers unique insight into their daily lives. You’re in your safe space, surrounded by your comforts (and often your pets!). That psychological safety often allows us to build trust and dive into meaningful work much faster than in a traditional setting.

3. Breaking Down Geographic Borders

Where you live shouldn't limit the quality of care you receive. Because I am licensed across multiple states, telehealth allows me to connect with individuals in rural areas, smaller towns, or regions where specialized mental health providers are scarce.

It breaks down the walls of physical distance, ensuring that finding the right therapeutic fit isn't restricted by your zip code.

Finding What Works for You

Therapy is deeply personal, and there is no single "right" way to do it. But if convenience, comfort, and expanded access sound like what you need, virtual sessions offer a flexible, deeply effective pathway forward. Also, you don’t just have to believe me!
